Druken Midin - Food for Ang Moh's Soul (Really?)..

Midin or sometimes we local folks here called them BILIN are a type of fern, a simple vegetables found in the jungle or some area that looks like a jungle.

I remembered one time, my mum and her group of friends wanted to pick some Midin and I wanted to follow them. My mum said "You must finish your homework first and you must make sure you wear shoe instead of slippers.", I said yes Mummy and quickly sat down and did my homework. You should have seen my speed I am like flash gordon...broooommm broooom and DONE my homework was done..and then Yeahhhh can gooooo...But then "Hmmm what did mummy said just now? ooo finish homework then can go..Ok all done. LETS GOOO.."..I quickly wore my slippers (Not any ordinary slippers you know..those japanese cheap slippers) and then ran towards the jungle area where I saw my mum and her friends far away. "MUMMMYYY" I shouted and my mum waved back...I was running towards them because I did not want to be left out from picking those Midins. I saw a log with lots and lots of thorns on the log. Not sure what it is called and instead of going around it which will waste a bit of my time, I decided to be a super hero and jumped over it..But because it rained last night and the ground was slippery, my smart japanese slipper slipped and instead of jumping over the thorny log, I stepped on the (let me repeat again) thorny log with my barefoot because my slipper went to the side of my feet and instead of stopping at what I am doing, I stepped on the ground with my foot and all those thorn moved further into my skin. OUCH...i sat down and shouted and cried. (Ok I was only 9 years old so I can still cry)....My mum ran towards me and saw my foot with all those little thorns sticking out from my foot and said "TOLD YOU TO WEAR SHOE. SEE WHAT HAPPENED WHEN YOU DO NOT LISTEN!" Thanks Mummy for the words of comfort..ha ha ha ha...They carried me back to the house and my mum sat for nearly 5 hours and using a tweaser slowly (instead of picking MIDIN) picked the thorns out one by one from my foot with me shouting until my throat dried out. OUCHHY..and the worst was while I sat there, my big sister told me that if I go to the doctor, the doctor will CUT off my Foot...My mum couldn't take all the thorns out. That very night my parents had to go to the doctor cos my dad need a checkup. I did not want to go into the clinic because of what my sis told me...I stayed outside in the car and of cos I was bored to death I played with my dad's steppler gun and GUESS WHAT! BANGGGG...Tears started to flow down my eyes. I was not even shouting..I accidently steppled my little pinky finger...All because of MIDIN. ha ha

OK OK that was a totally different topic of what I am suppose to write here. Sidetrack a bit..What I am going to write is a recipe for cooking Midin. Why Food For Ang Moh's Soul? Ang Moh are kwai lo or caucasion. They love midin so much. Midin can be either cooked with red wine, with garlic only, with belachan or make it midin salad. All YUMMY. today I am going to cook Midin with red wine.

INGREDIENTS
  • Midin or Bilin - it comes in a bundle - Buying Midin is like share market. Sometimes it is so cheap you can get 3 bundles for RM5 and sometimes it can be soooo expensive 1 bundle is RM5 OUCH-depends on the season
  • Ginger - The more the merrier but of cos don't put too much otherwise smells like GINGER. ha ha
  • salt
  • Cooking Red Wine - Not western red wine. My friend and I made this red wine - Shoosh do not tell people later on we will end up in jail
  • Oil for cooking

STEPS
Step 1
  • Cut ginger into thin strips. The thinner it is the better so when you cook, the nice smell will come out.
  • Prepare the Midin by cleaning it and throwing away any roots or hard stems.

Step 2
  • Put oil into the wok and when it is hot enough, throw the ginger into the oil and stir fry it for a while. Till the smell comes out. Please do not let it get burn because burnt ginger is YUCK...

Step 3
  • Throw the midin into the wok and stir fry it for a while. Put some salt - based on your taste. Not too much not too little
  • Stir Fry it for a while.

Step 4
  • Before taking out the Midin, pour in the cooking red wine. If you want to have strong red wine smell, pour more but of cos not too much later on you get drunk. ha ha ha ha
  • Mix them all up and then take them out from the wok onto a plate.

DONE...

You can now serve it to your Ang Moh friends..ha ha ha..GOOD LUCK

Gracie's Ugly Steam Fish

Now lets start with my first dish...

INGREDIENTS
3 medium size fishes (if you buy big one, you only need one or two depends on how many mouths you have to feed)
- Make sure the fish is fresh and the fish monger cuts the inside and clean the fish. I do not like to cut fish at all
3 Tomatoes
1 packet of salted vegetables (Sometimes I buy sweet ones)
3 or 4 Black Mushrooms
Ginger (cut to strips that you can cover the fishes and put inside their tummy) - Not too much though later on smell like Ginger Fish
4 cloves of garlic (optional)
3 balls of red small onion (optional)
3 stalks of spring onion

OIL TO POUR OVER FISH
2 tablespoon of light soya sauce
2 tablespoon of sesame oile
1 tablespoon of peanut oil or canola oil
a bit of sugar

STEPS
Step 1
Cut Tomatoes, mushrooms, salted veges, ginger, garlic and onion into small pieces or slices

Step 2
Cut the body of the fishes. Cut across so the juice of the tomatoes, salted vege, mushrooms and ginger will flow into the fishes and make it taste nicer during steaming..
- Lazy way of cutting the fish which is not advisable. Please use a proper cutting board.
Step 3
Wash the fishes with salt and water if you don't like strong fishy smell and then place the fishes on a big plate or anything that can fit them.
Step 4
Put some ginger, garlic and onion into the empty tummy (the one dat the fish monger cut) and all the tomatoes, mushrooms, salted veges, ginger, garlic, and onion on top of the fishes
- Ha ha not an artist..Simply put all the things on top of the fish..Cover them alll up
Step 5
Start the fire for the steamer and when the water is boiling, place the plate of fishes onto the steamer and cover the lid.
- Hot Hot steam. Quick close
Step 6
Steam it for around 12 to 15 mins depends on the size of the fish

Step 7
When the fishes is nearly done, put the oil and spring onion into a wok and stir fry it till the oil boils.
- ha ha one of my spring onion fell to the floor. No worries, just pick it and wash it and tada
Step 8
Take out the fish and throw away the water from the steaming and pour the hot oil all over the fishes...

DONE...

Introduction To Messy Gracie

Hi there, Grace or Gracie here. Purpose of this blog is to record down the recipes of the food that I am going to prepare or cook which I got it from the Internet or from my own brain. ha ha. I am not a clean cook. I am pretty messy actually. My best friend suggested that I create this blog to show that messy people that cooks can also cook good and delicious food. I love to cook and cooking makes me relax and helps me destress.

I don't really measure things. Some I measure it properly some is more on my guts and taste. Remember cooking is based on your taste, smell and feeling. As long is not too salty, not too sweet, not too starchy, not too spicy (depends on individual) you are good to go. Everybody can cook even the messy ones. You don't have to be a clean freak to be the best cook. Always remember that.

So lets stop yapping on the intro and start cooking
